The thread that runs from the first Bippie to yours, and where to find it.
Turn a Bippie over. Low on the right side of the hidden pocket there is a small heart, embroidered as a single line, and if you look closely you will see that the line does not quite close. That is not a flaw. That open heart is the Heartline, and this letter is about what it means.
The short answer
The Heartline is the unbroken thread that runs from the first handmade Bippie, stitched in the 1970s for two little girls who needed comforting, through every Bippie made since, into the arms of every child who names one. It is the story a Bippie belongs to. Every one we make is another stitch in it, and the heart is left open because the thread is still going.
Why a thread
The first Bippie was not a product. It was one soft thing, sewn by someone who loved two children and wanted them to have something to hold. It was hugged until it wore out, and the idea of it did not. When we began making Bippies again, we wanted a way to say that each new one is not a copy of the first but a continuation of it: the same shape, the same pocket, the same reason, carried forward by hand.
A thread was the honest picture. Every Bippie is made of thread, held together by it, given its face by it. A line of stitching can run for a very long way and still be one line. So can a story. You can read where it began on Our Story.
Where you will find it
On the Bippie itself, the Heartline is the open heart on the back pocket, stitched in one stroke and left unfinished on purpose. It is the same heart that sits in our logo, drawn the same way, for the same reason.
On this website, the Heartline is the single soft line that begins at the heart on the Bippie's pocket at the top of our homepage and travels down the page, section by section, until it finishes in the heart at the very bottom. We built it as one thread on purpose. There is only one, and it is the same line the whole way down, because that is the point.
In your home, the Heartline is quieter than either of those. It is the moment a child gives their Bippie a name.
How a Bippie joins
Every Bippie order carries its First Page, a small card with one line handwritten on the front and a keepsake record on the back: my Bippie's name is, welcomed home on, beloved by, our first adventure was. The card rides beside the Bippie, which arrives sealed, in its wrapping. When the seal is opened, the name is chosen, the card is filled in, and someone tucks it into the pocket for the first time, that Bippie has joined the Heartline. There is no form to send us and nothing to sign up for. The joining happens at your kitchen table, and it is complete the moment the pocket closes.
Families add to it from there. A note before a hard day. A drawing. A photograph from a trip. A wish written at bedtime and forgotten until it is found years later. Psychologists have a name for objects like this, transitional objects, and the research on why they help children feel steady is real. We think the name undersells it. A Bippie with a full pocket is a family's own small archive, and the Heartline is the sum of all of them.
What the Heartline is not
It is not a club, a membership, or a newsletter. It has no login and no fee. If you would like to hear from us, the Bippie List on our homepage is where we send word, and it is a separate thing. The Heartline does not need your email address. It only needs a Bippie with a name.
Why it matters to us
A comfort companion is meant to be outgrown. Children grow up, and the Bippie ends up on a shelf, or in a box in the attic, or in the arms of the next child. The Heartline is our way of saying that this is not the end of the story but the shape of it. The first Bippie was loved to pieces fifty years ago, and here we are, still stitching. When yours is passed down, the thread keeps going. That is what we are making. Not a toy that lasts, but a story that does.
If you would like to see the heart up close before choosing, it is on every Bippie and Mini Bippie, and you can read what the rest of a Bippie is made of on Materials & Safety. Questions are always welcome at info@bippieco.com.
Beloved,
The Bippie Co.
